Do You Honor Your Body?

The first time I heard of this “concept” was when I saw a Spartan Race commercial many years ago; so long ago, I cannot find that commercial anymore.

I understood that even though I’ve always been active, it wasn’t until them, that concept really “click” in my brain.

I realized that many of us are blessed to be born with this amazing body, capable of remarkable things, healthy, strong; that allows us to walk, jump, run, but yet the majority of people don’t “use” the body they were given.

We neglected our bodies by sitting all day long, not stretching, being indoors all the time; but also by abusing unhealthy foods and substances, by having negative thoughts, being resentful, that little by little, eat our health and vitality away.

We use and abuse pharmaceutical drugs because we think it is “easier” to take a pill for that headache; instead of practicing preventive medicine, like, making sure our body is hydrated. Mindfulness - Mind2Body - Meditation - Nature

This body of ours is the vessel that holds our essence, our spirit, our soul, who we are; and yet, we do not prioritize taking care of it, but why?

I believe it is misinformation, thinking that achieving a healthy body is just one way forward.

Let’s use this simple example:

We say to ourselves, “if I exercise regularly I will be healthy, and my mood will improve,” But why do I still get moody?

If Exercising releases endorphins, and endorphins make people happy, why even the smallest little thing makes me lose my head?

The answers is: because you are not giving your body what it so desperately needs, balance!

You can exercise all you want, but if you feel hungry all the time, if you have mood swings, if you feel tired throughout the day, you lack concentration; can you call yourself a healthy person? I think no.

That was my case so many years ago.

I looked fit, and yet I had all those symptoms.

That’s is not living to my fullest potential; I was not honoring my body; I was doing the opposite; I was biting it up.

How was I doing that?

By drinking, smoking, eating unhealthy food more often than healthy choices, not enough sleep, lack of mindfulness practice.

As you can see, I was so wrong thinking that those things would not affect me, I mean, I was young after all, what’s the worst it can happen, am I right?

I started doing research, trying to understand why I would feel this way, the more I read, the more confused I got.

Being healthy does not mean “never getting sick,” if, on the other hand, you have feelings of judgment thors your boss. Or being able to run 15k without stopping, if on the other side I feel tired all the time.

During my research time, I learn that us, as the human race, are taught from very little to settle.

“That’s life,” Our parents will tell us, not knowing any better.

I say no, I want it all!

So I started by making small changes to my daily routine, and little by little, I started incorporating one thing at the time.

It wasn’t easy (especially the quitting smoking part), but with consistency, I started honoring my body the way I should have done all this time.

This is how I achieved Mind and Body balance:

  1. By drinking plenty of water during the day
  2. Starting my day with a warm cup of lemon tea
  3. Meditating
  4. Having a wholesome breakfast
  5. Eating the rainbow
  6. Going to bed early
  7. Reading mindful books
  8. Exercising regularly
  9. Joining groups that share my same interest
  10. Watching my thoughts

It seems like an overwhelming list of things to do, but if you think about it, it really isn’t.

Start with one thing at the time, set small goals, maybe next week make a goal to drink eight glasses of water, them next week start practicing meditation 5 min in the morning.

There’s no such of thing as “small steps” even if you can’t see it. As long as you are moving forward, you are winning this race.

You can (and should) have it all!
